Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition)

Great Price "Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition)" for $26.00 Today

I'm currently only 4 chapters into the Kindle version of this book and so far I can honestly say I've been able to learn more about Objective C than any other book. I have a background in computer science and have learned various programming languages such as BASIC, Pascal, LISP, Scheme, Java, even assembly - but I never got around to learning C or any of its variants. I've consumed many instructional books on programming and can honestly say that this one is the most well-written and easily comprehensible out of all of them. The author takes great care to explain virtually every aspect of Objective C syntax and does it in a way that's comfortable for both neophytes as well as those who have had some prior programming experience.

Additionally, the Kindle version of this book is done very well, easily readable on the Kindle device or an iPad (I've been reading it on both). When it's displayed on the iPad (with the Kindle app), you also get the additional benefit of color illustrations. Although I have a long way to go in this book, I can already say that I will have no problem reading it on my PC, my Kindle, or my iPad.

If you're interested in developing apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, start with this book to give yourself a decent understanding of the Objective-C language, and THEN read the more iPhone OS-specific programming books such as "Head First iPhone Development" and "iPhone Application Development for Dummies". I tried to start with the Head First book and pretty much went nowhere with it until I started reading "Programming in Objective-C 2.0". Now concepts are starting to come together and I'm excited about what I can start doing with the iPhone SDK.

Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition) Overviews

THE #1 BESTSELLING BOOK ON OBJECTIVE-C 2.0

Programming in Objective-C 2.0 provides the new programmer a complete, step-by-step introduction to Objective-C, the primary language used to develop applications for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS X platforms.

The book does not assume previous experience with either C or object-oriented programming languages, and it includes many detailed, practical examples of how to put Objective-C to use in your everyday iPhone/iPad or Mac OS X programming tasks.

A powerful yet simple object-oriented programming language that’s based on the C programming language, Objective-C is widely available not only on OS X and the iPhone/iPad platform but across many operating systems that support the gcc compiler, including Linux, Unix, and Windows systems.

The second edition of this book thoroughly covers the latest version of the language, Objective-C 2.0. And it shows not only how to take advantage of the Foundation framework’s rich built-in library of classes but also how to use the iPhone SDK to develop programs designed for the iPhone/iPad platform.

What is the best book for learning Objective-C? This one, is the one ! - Victor Quintanilha - Canada, Québec
This is the greatest book for learning Objective-C. Every page is a self-contained "very well written", with examples and screen shots and exact directions to process.

The book is divided into chapters for each of the different major topics with complete Table of Contents, make it very easy to find exactly the help you're looking for.

Talking about help. The author made a super, incredible website "forum type" that you can get support and great assistance followed with quiz and many other goodies.

The writing is in a very light and non conversational style, that make the reading fun and easy - each chapter has some kind of humorous, and then dives right into how2. You can either read through thes cover to cover or use it as a reference manual in the future.

I personally find the book to be the easiest one I have ever used. But even so, I picked up several good tips and tricks from this book and his great website that come with this book.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all future newbie coders who want to get started with Objective-C.

Awesome - Britt T. Griscom -
The brilliant thing about this book is that it comes with an online forum where you can learn from the other students as well as from the author, who replies to all unanswered questions, as far as I can tell. It's like getting a complete course for . It's an amazing deal. The forum is so helpful that I would never by a book like this that didn't have one.

Programming in Objective-C 2.0 LiveLessons Bundle

Great Price "Programming in Objective-C 2.0 LiveLessons Bundle" for $44.09 Today

I really like this book as an introduction into the Objective C language and quite frankly into the world of programming in general. The examples in the book are lucid which to me is the most critical part of any computer science book. The examples are also extended throughout the book which is nice because you have the ability to reuse the programs you create to further expand your understanding of the concepts. The book also does a good job explaining general object-oriented principles such as information hiding, polymorphism, dynamic binding, inheritance, dynamic typing etc. I would definitely recommend this book to either anyone interested in learning Objective-C from the ground floor or anyone looking to get a ground floor look at Object Oriented programming through a specific language. The book is more catered to the former than the later but if you are looking for both than this is certainly the book for you.

I am a graduate student in software engineering so I have come accross a lot of books on various subjects and this is certainly one worth buying.

Some times a video is better - Barry Johnson - Sunnyvale, Ca USA
I was hoping this DVD would be available alone since I had already bought the book.
But I let someone else have the copy so not a big deal.
Video is one way I feel that amplifies my learning process.
I consider both very helpful and do think that some other authors should try this for new material.
I am hoping that volume 2 is just as helpful.
I do recommend this for new users to programming and new to Objective C.

Only one major flaw... - T. Berarducci - Granite Bay, CA
I really like this bundle. Yes, as some reviewers have pointed out there are some parts that seem amateurish. It looks like it was filmed in the author's bedroom. Not much production flash. But who the heck cares? If you want to learn how to program in Objective C 2.0, and that is all you care about, then I suggest you get this bundle.

My only warning is that the video DVD that comes with it is aptly named "PART ONE" because it only covers half of the book. I actually did not have a problem with this because I assumed if I liked the DVD I would be given the opportunity to purchase Part Two. NOPE. There is NO PART TWO. So if you like Part One you are out of luck. You have been warned.

iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

Great Price "iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone" for $24.50 Today

Coming from a PHP world, Object-Oriented Programming can be difficult to wrap your mind around. Thankfully the introduction chapters here aren't too far overhead. OOP concepts are a must-have for modern programmers, and this book makes no contentions to teach you Objective-C directly. However, the author has included some good references to where you can take beginner OOP courses.

Through the first year of iPhone's being and well into the pre-2.0 and post-2.0 environment, this book proves invaluable for its chapters on the UIKit, a large part of the API that is used to build graphical apps on the device. Extensive coverage of UIKit classes, as well as undocumented 1.0 enumerations for certain components makes this a frequent reader when you are getting started.

The examples within the chapters cover just about anything you can think of doing with the UI, within reason. You will be able to confidently build apps that rival the ones included by Apple itself. Chapters on audio and graphics subsystems are as complete as could be at the time, and offer some examples that would be useful for game developers.

Quirks about the Ojective-C language are briefly discussed, then wonderfully mastered and repeated frequently to drive the point home. Object delegates, high-level messging, inherritence; you will get a full course of modern OOP goodness.

By the time you are done working with the chapter's examples you will feel like a million bucks. The iPhone platform is now your own lump of clay for you to mold and shape to your will. Couple this with some in-depth cocoa publications and you have the all the keys needed to swing the doors wide open. Feel smart, be informed and discover the tremendously versatile API that is iPhone OS.

The 2.0 version of Apple software makes some important changes, but for the most part, this book is still very useful. Great for beginners -- even if you don't know OOP, you can learn from examples on the 'Net and be way very soon.

iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Overviews

Certain technologies bring out everyone's hidden geek, and iPhone did the moment it was released. Even though Apple created iPhone as a closed device, tens of thousands of developers bought them with the express purpose of designing and running third-party software.

In this clear and concise book, veteran hacker Jonathan Zdziarski -- one of the original hackers of the iPhone -- explains the iPhone's native environment and how you can build software for this device using its Objective-C, C, and C++ development frameworks.

iPhone Open Application Development walks you through the iPhone's native development environment, offers an overview of the Objective-C language you'll use with it, and supplies background for the iPhone operating system. You also get detailed recipes and working examples for everyone's favorite iPhone features -- graphics and audio programming, interfaces for adding multitouch functionality to games, the use of hardware sensors, and the device's vast user interface kit.

This book explains:

  • How to access the iPhone's underlying operating system
  • The makeup of an iPhone application
  • How to get the open source tool chain running on your desktop
  • The iPhone's core user interface framework, which is heavily tied to major application-level functions
  • Using the many touted iPhone features such as multitouch, hardware sensors, and gestures
  • Intercepting and handling event notifications for many iPhone-related events
  • Raw video surfaces and 3D transformations that take you deeper into advanced graphics on the iPhone
  • How to record and play simple sounds and intercept sound events
  • Advanced digital audio output using Apple's new Audio Toolbox framework
  • Advanced user interface components such as section lists, keyboards, and image manipulation

The Appendix includes a compendium of miscellaneous code examples for cool application features, such as using the camera and creating a CoverFlow®-like album browser.

This book is a true hacker's book, designed for the millions of users who have run third party applications on their iPhone, but its concepts and code examples have shown to be remarkably similar to Apple's official SDK, making this book a valuable resource for both camps. Any programmer can use this book to write applications with the same spectacular effects that made the device an immediate hit, and impress users just as much as the official iPhone software does. That programmer can easily be you.

    Objective-C Pocket Reference

Great Price "Objective-C Pocket Reference" for $5.15 Today

As an advanced C++ programmer trying to pick up Objective-C (a weird freakin' language if you ask me), I found this little Pocket Reference to be invaluable. For one thing, its really small which I like -- who needs another tome to litter the bookshelves? I find that it is well written, I actually just started reading it from the beginning and found it to be pretty easy to follow. Finally I = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"Understand"]; the crazy formatting for Objective-C methods which just looked like jibberish to me at first. Believe me, after 20 years of programming I can usually understand languages that I've never touched before -- I really needed this book to help me get a handle on Objective-C and it did a commendable job.

Negatives: of course, this is not exactly comprehensive. Since I am also learning Cocoa, I would have liked a little more Cocoa material mixed in. I did find that the writing was at times a bit confusing when discusssing some of the more abstruse concepts of Objective-C. And, always, I like lots of real code examples -- perhaps that just isn't feasible in a book this compact.

Overall, this is a very good book for a newcomer to Objective-C. With this in one hand and Google in the other I can get by quite nicely as I write my iPhone Apps.

Learn Objective-C for Java Developers (Learn Series)

Great Price "Learn Objective-C for Java Developers (Learn Series)" for $11.61 Today

I've been programming with Java since 1998. It's a nice language/platform with automatic garbage collection and a rich set of 3rd party APIs and libraries. However, the introduction of iPhone changed the world, and I wanted to develop some apps for iPhone. Since iPhone does not support Java as their development language, I had to learn Objective-C. Even though I learned some C/C++ back from college days, Objective-C is still quite foreign to me. It's a bit frustrating to Google and searching through Apple's documentation to find something equivalent (that works in Java) to be used in Objective-C. After many fruitless searches and frustration, I thought I might never learn Objective-C. Then this book was released and I grabbed a copy. After reading it, I truly wish this book was available earlier so I didn't waste so much time searching blindly in Google.

James did a wonderful job bring Java and Objective-C comparison side by side. But keep in mind, no single book can cover EVERYTHING between Java and Objective-C. There are obviously certain things missing but for the most part, it covers many grounds between Java and Objective-C.

    Part 1 - Language
Chapeter 1-7 give you some nice introduction to Objective-C, and along the way, comparing with Java, and gradually feeds you more and more Objective-C features. Chapter 5 on Protocols and Categories is very nice, but I wish it was much longer. Protocols and Categories are very powerful features in Objective-C. They alone deserve a whole book ;)

    Part 2 - Translating Technologies
Chapter 8-15 touches on many fundamentals of both languages, Strings and primitive values, Garbage Collection, Introspection, Files, Serialization, Exception Handling and Threads. The author shows us side-by-side code snippets comparison between Java and Objective-C. This alone is invaluable to us readers. There are some mind-bending situations where you will say: why it's so different? and makes you feel confused and puzzled. Then if you read up Apple's official documentation, and explore the APIs further, you will realize why things are in certain way in Objective-C. Definitely lots of learning there.

    Part 3 - Programming Patterns
Chapter 16-23 shows the readers some common programming and design patterns in both language flavors. Collection pattern, Delegation pattern (lots of Objective-C APIs are through the use of delegation), Provider/Subscriber pattern, Observer Pattern(you will find how easy it is to setup observers in your program), MVC, Lazy Initialization, Factory, and our favorite Singleton pattern.
Of course, there are many more patterns that are not covered here, but these basic patterns are enough to get you started. Again, patterns alone warrants a whole 900-page book, so hopefully something comes out soon.

    Part 4 - Advanced Objective-C
Chapter 24-26 deals with memory management, mixing c and objective-c, and runtime.
Memory management is especially important in iPhone SDK since so far iPhone SDK does not support automatic garbage collection. So all the memory allocations you have in the codes must be taken care of. Mixing C and Objective-C is very interesting, it should be very helpful for gaming development, where in many cases, involves game engines written in C.

Overall, it's a solid book for Java developers who want to dive into Objective-C.
You might need to read it a few times to fully understand certain topics.
It's a good reference book as well if you want to look up something quick in Objective-C but you only know how to do that in Java.

I needed this book a year ago, but am thrilled it is finally here - Matthew McCullough - Highlands Ranch, CO, USA
Being a Java developer for more than 10 years and having explored the Objective-C platform for iPhone development for more than the last year, I struggled in the early days. I longed for a document that spoke to me, the Java emigre, and helped me map my existing knowledge into this new field of development. Finally, such a book has hit the shelves in the form of James Bucanek's Learn Objective-C for Java Developers.

James warns us that direct comparisons between these languages are insufficient, but acknowledges it gives us a great common vocabulary to start with. Once the comparisons have been drawn and as we become comfortable on the Objective-C language, James takes us beyond Obj-C as Java and shows the dynamism of this unique platform. We progress through memory management, persistence, and other platform specific critical technologies, learning each from James in a very friendly tutorial-style manner.

The book ends in a fevered pitch with an overview of mixing C and Obj-C. Overall, I was very pleased with the book, primarily because it spoke to me as a Java developer, and second because the writing style was very digestible. I highly recommend this book to any Java developer moving to the iPhone platform.

Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: Making App Store Apps Without Objective-C or Cocoa

Great Price "Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: Making App Store Apps Without Objective-C or Cocoa" for $18.53 Today

I don't consider myself much of a programmer. Creating webpages with HTML and CSS is pretty easy, but when it comes to working with PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, or other languages, I frequently turn to books and tutorials to help me figure out what's possible vs. what I want to accomplish. Building iPhone Apps... by Jonathan Stark shows n00b programmers like myself, how to make apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. However, it's more accurate to say that it teaches people to make websites using an iPhone-ish look-and-feel. The book assumes the reader has some experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but doesn't require people to be experts in those languages. In other words, it's accessible for people who rarely do coding.

Like most programming books the first chapter covers the basics: HTML, CSS, JavaScript. It also discusses the differences between a web app and a native app, and the pros and cons of the different approaches. Subsequent chapters deal mostly with coding and how to make web pages look like iPhone apps. The book also covers important tools like jQuery, PhoneGap, and XCode, all of which extend the functionality of webpages and turn them into actual applications suitable for the iPhone.

The book is slim at less than 200 pages, but it's also to-the-point. With some programming books, I get the feeling authors are padding the word count or page count by including material that isn't absolutely necessary. This book keeps the fluff to a minimum, and it gains clarity from the brevity. Though it isn't a huge programming book, it doesn't waste the reader's time. The examples and discussions within the book are useful and informative, without straying too far off topic.

The only potential drawback for this book is that it came out in January 2010 - the same month that Apple announced the iPad. The iPad uses the same operating system as the iPhone, and it's expected to have a number of changes in the not-too-distant future. I don't expect it will change the usefulness of this book - web apps created for the iPhone will still work. However, I wonder about the differences between iPhone apps and iPad apps. Supposedly it's not a huge leap from one to the other, but there are definite differences between the two platform. It makes me think this book will need a Second Edition soon, or it will need some sort of addendum available online. Will the iPad get a different book, or will it be included in future editions of this book?

Despite the drawback, I still recommend this book. It's short, but it doesn't waste the reader's time. It's useful, informative, clear, and easy-to-follow. I wish more programming books were as clear and as brief.

Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: Making App Store Apps Without Objective-C or Cocoa Overviews

What people are saying about Building iPhone Apps w/ HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

"The future of mobile development is clearly web technologies like CSS, HTML and JavaScript. Jonathan Stark shows you how to leverage your existing web development skills to build native iPhone applications using these technologies."

--John Allsopp, author and founder of Web Directions

"Jonathan's book is the most comprehensive documentation available for developing web applications for mobile Safari. Not just great tech coverage, this book is an easy read of purely fascinating mobile tidbits in a fun colloquial style. Must have for all PhoneGap developers."

    -- Brian LeRoux, Nitobi Software

It's a fact: if you know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you already have the tools you need to develop your own iPhone apps. With this book, you'll learn how to use these open source web technologies to design and build apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch on the platform of your choice-without using Objective-C or Cocoa.

Device-agnostic mobile apps are the wave of the future, and this book shows you how to create one product for several platforms. You'll find guidelines for converting your product into a native iPhone app using the free PhoneGap framework. And you'll learn why releasing your product as a web app first helps you find, fix, and test bugs much faster than if you went straight to the App Store with a product built with Apple's tools.

    • Build iPhone apps with tools you already know how to use
    • Learn how to make an existing website look and behave like an iPhone app
    • Add native-looking animations to your web app using jQTouch
    • Take advantage of client-side data storage with apps that run even when the iPhone is offline
    • Hook into advanced iPhone features -- including the accelerometer, geolocation, and vibration -- with JavaScript
    • Submit your applications to the App Store with Xcode

Very clear and easy to understand. If you have a solid understanding of jQuery there is no reason why you can't follow the steps in this book.

Learn Objective–C on the Mac (Learn Series) Review

This book takes an introductory look at objective-C based on the reader already knowing C programming. It does an excellent job of presenting the major features and building on top of what went before. It includes some examples using Cocoa (I can't imagine that you could otherwise). It correctly makes a major point in its treatment of memory management throughout the book and details the difference between retain-release method, memory pool method, and garbage collection (new in ObjC 2.0). It also makes note that iPhone development primarily requires use of the retain-release method.
As C is a minimalist language and Objective-C is a minimal layer on top of C, there is not a huge amount of material to cover (Almost 1/3 of the book covers ObjC 2.0.) This makes the book a quick read, but does not diminish its value. Compared to shorter treatments of Objective-C, this provides a much better explanation.

Horrible Book - Happy Coder - Singapore
I have read many programming books, and this is by far the worst of the lot. Look at the table of contents, to see that
    a) OOP in Objective C is covered too early
    b) The basics of the language itself is never covered (loops, data structures, conditionals etc.)
    c) There is *no* treatment on exception handling

The list goes on. This book does not teach or present anything a way that can't be easier learnt from the XCode documentation or found online. Buy something else.
